| + | # Norman MacLeod's WW1 Service |
| + | |
| + | The wartime service of [Norman MacLeod](/people/norman-macleod-b1880), one of the most extensively documented episodes in the family history. |
| + | |
| + | ## Prior British Army service |
| + | |
| + | Sometime in the 1890s Norman joined the British Army — the 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (per his 1914 AIF statement), serving about 5 years including in India and possibly the Boer War. In 1939 he described the unit as the 3rd Seaforth Highlanders (service number 8393). Tracing the record is complicated by *another* Norman McLeod, also from [Barvas](/places/barvas-isle-of-lewis), who served in the same units at the same time. |
| + | |
| + | ## AIF service timeline (WW1) |
| + | |
| + | - **1 Oct 1914** — enlists in the 16th Battalion AIF at Morphettville, SA (service number 1305) |
| + | - **2 May 1915** — shot in the chest at Gallipoli |
| + | - **2 Jun 1915** — transferred to H.S. *Della*, repatriated to Manchester Hospital, UK |
| + | - **3 Mar 1916** — rejoins the 48th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir, Cairo (the 48th was formed from sections of the 16th plus new recruits after Gallipoli) |
| + | - **3 Jun 1916** — arrives in France en route to the Western Front |
| + | - **6 Aug 1916** — suffers shell-shock at Pozières; **10 Aug** embarked for Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, via Boulogne and H.S. *Cambria* |
| + | - **28 Aug 1916** — marries [Catherine Gunn](/people/catherine-gunn-macleod-b1873) in [Glasgow](/places/glasgow-scotland) (see [the marriage](/events/marriage-norman-macleod-to-catherine-gunn-1916)) |
| + | - **11 Feb 1917** — rejoins the 48th Battalion in France |
| + | - **11 Apr 1917** — wounded in the right leg and left in the trenches during the Australian retreat at Bullecourt; captured by the Germans, declared MIA, becomes a POW |
| + | - **17 Dec 1918** — repatriated to the UK, admitted to Lewisham Military Hospital with influenza (Spanish Flu?) |
| + | - **20 Sep 1919** — discharged from the AIF in London, having requested to be demobbed in the UK |
| + | |
| + | ## Aftermath |
| + | |
| + | His UK address (10 Grove St, St George's Cross, [Glasgow](/places/glasgow-scotland)) recurs across his AIF papers. In March 1939 he made a Statutory Declaration seeking replacement of his lost WW1 medals. Andrew Whillas Jnr later sought British archive records with limited success. |

| + | ## [2026-08-02] ingest | Whillas–McLeod history spreadsheet (Rev 4), 1860s–1970s |
| + | |
| + | Ingested 12 decade CSV sheets from `source/` (the family history spreadsheet, "Whillas–Mcleod history from … Rev 4"), covering 1860–1979. Each sheet is a years × months matrix of dated events plus footnotes. |
| + | |
| + | **Created:** |
| + | - **12 timeline pages** — one per decade, [1860s](/timeline/1860s) through [1970s](/timeline/1970s). |
| + | - **39 people pages** — the full Whillas and McLeod/Gunn lines from the 1846-born [John Foggo Whillas](/people/john-foggo-whillas-b1846) down to the 14 children of [Dick](/people/richard-charles-whillas-b1920) and [Cath](/people/catherine-mcleod-whillas-b1920). |
| + | - **19 place pages** — Scotland/Ireland origins, South Australian towns and lighthouses, and the family's Victorian and WA homes. |
| + | - **9 event pages** — emigrations, marriages, [Norman MacLeod's WW1 service](/events/norman-macleod-ww1-service), and the [1970 Hopetoun truck accident](/events/hopetoun-truck-accident-1970). |
| + | - **3 document pages** + index, including a scan of the [Catherine Gunn death certificate (1950)](/documents/catherine-gunn-death-certificate-1950). |
| + | - **[Family tree](/family-tree)** (Mermaid diagram + outline), **[index](/index)**, and this log. |
| + | |
| + | **Notes / open questions carried from the source:** |
| + | - Cath's birth year is recorded as 1921 on her certificate but appears as 1920 in some family records. |
| + | - Norman MacLeod's post-1936 lighthouse postings (Althorpe Island, Cape du Couedic) rest on Cath's recollection; the SA Archives have no record after Cape Northumberland. |
| + | - Several "when was the move to …?" questions (Brae, Sth Purrumbete, Invergordon, Fremantle) remain open in the source. |
| + | - Timeline is organised by decade (matching the source sheets). Individual year pages (e.g. `timeline/1963.md`) can be split out later as content grows. |
| + | - The bulk photo archive in `source/Mcleod, Whillas family/` has **not** yet been catalogued — see [photos index](/photos/index). |

| + | |
| + | ## Early life & British Army |
| + | |
| + | Norman was the eldest of three brothers born at Barvas. Sometime in the 1890s he joined the British Army (1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) and served about 5 years, including in India and possibly the Boer War. In 1939 he described his unit as the 3rd Seaforth Highlanders (service number 8393). Untangling his record is complicated by another Norman McLeod, also from Barvas, who served in the same units. |
| + | |
| + | In the early 1900s he and a brother took up land near [Geraldton, WA](/places/geraldton-western-australia) under the WA Homestead Act, but the venture failed and he returned to the UK, working his way back on a sailing ship (via Rio de Janeiro). He gained an electrician's qualification at the Royal Technical College in Glasgow. |
| + | |
| + | ## WW1 service (AIF) |
| + | |

| + | - **11 Apr 1917** — wounded and captured at Bullecourt; becomes a POW |
| + | - **20 Sep 1919** — discharged from the AIF in London |
| + | |
| + | ## Lighthouse career |
| + | |
| + | Norman worked for the SA Lighthouse Service on a series of 3-year contracts: |
| + | |
| + | - [Cape Jaffa](/places/cape-jaffa-lighthouse) — from 11 Feb 1927 |
| + | - [Neptune Island](/places/neptune-island-lighthouse) — from 7 May 1930 |

| + | |
| + | He bought 28 Cameron St, [Kingston](/places/kingston-south-australia) in 1931 (sold 1946), and later houses in Salter St, Kensington. He lived with Dick and Cath's family for much of the 1950s at [Bray](/places/bray-robe-south-australia). |

| + | ## Notes & uncertainties |
| + | |
| + | - **Norman's SA lighthouse tenure** (from Australian Archives log extracts, faxed to Robert Whillas 19 Mar 1997; he was on 3-year contracts, not staff): [Cape Jaffa](/places/cape-jaffa-lighthouse) from 11 Feb 1927; [Neptune Island](/places/neptune-island-lighthouse) from 7 May 1930; [Cape Northumberland](/places/cape-northumberland-lighthouse) from 19 Feb 1933 until 29 Mar 1936. Cath's later recollections add Althorpe Island (1934–36) and [Cape du Couedic](/places/cape-du-couedic-lighthouse), Kangaroo Island (1936–40), plus Troubridge Shoal and Lowly Point during installation periods. |
| + | - At Cape Jaffa there were onshore houses 25 km from [Kingston](/places/kingston-south-australia); the lighthouse itself was 8 km offshore. For the last 6 months there, Cath boarded in Kingston with Jim (Wag) Winter. |

| + | |
| + | - Around 1949–50 the family left Angaston on a camping trip (Morris Oxford + trailer) up the east coast, ending at [Bray/Brae](/places/bray-robe-south-australia) on a square mile of virgin country. They lived in a tent while Dick built the house; he worked as a wool classer and grew strawberry clover for seed. The children attended school in Robe and by correspondence; Nan went to Millicent HS. Norman lived with them for much of this time. |
| + | - Because of high wool prices (Korean War) Dick couldn't afford to stock Bray with sheep, and schooling was difficult, so D & C bought a dairy farm at [Sth Purrumbete](/places/south-purrumbete-victoria) in shares with neighbour Vin Witwer (~125 cows). The children attended Tandarook PS and bussed to [Camperdown](/places/camperdown-victoria) HS. Nan met John Walsh on the bus. The family left c. late 1959/early 1960 for a drier, warmer climate — [Invergordon](/places/invergordon-victoria) Post Office near Numurkah. |
