Timeline: 1880s
The McLeod brothers are born in Barvas on the Isle of Lewis.
Events
- 15 Mar 1880 — Norman MacLeod born, Barvas (spelling "MacLeod" on birth certificate, which is held). He had two younger brothers.
- 3 Sep 1881 — Donald MacLeod (brother of Norman) born, Barvas (Mormon records). May have emigrated to Canada or the USA; some indication he fought with the Canadians in WW1.
- 1884 — Neil McLeod (youngest brother of Norman) born, Barvas (no exact date). He later joined Norman farming near Geraldton, WA; the venture lasted only a few years due to drought.
Notes & uncertainties
- Neil McLeod died several days after being injured when his vessel, the MV Michael E, was torpedoed and sank in the Atlantic on 2 June 1941. His son, also named Neil McLeod, was in the crew and with him when he died.
- Note on identity: there was another Norman McLeod born in Barvas in 1872 who also served in the 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in the Boer War, which complicates untangling "our" Norman's army record.
