Invergordon, Victoria

A locality near Numurkah in northern Victoria, where the Whillas family ran the Post Office through the 1960s.

Connection to the family

  • The family moved here c. late 1959/early 1960 from Sth Purrumbete, seeking a drier, warmer climate, and ran the Invergordon Post Office.
  • Teena Whillas recalled her mother teaching her telephone and counter work here; the interview describes the family post office as also serving as a newsagency. See Teena's interview.
  • Greg Stephen Whillas, the youngest child, was born at nearby Numurkah on 1 Nov 1960.
  • After the Hopetoun truck accident in 1970 and Dick's resulting bankruptcy, the Post Office was sold and the family moved to East Fremantle.

The home-page photograph, Invergordon Family Lounge (newspaper, 1963), dates from this period.
