Life

John Henry Whillas — known as JH or Jack — was the eldest child of Charles Johnston Whillas and Charlotte Sloggett. He began work with the PMG on 24 June 1925 and passed the exam for Junior Mechanic in June 1927, remaining with the PMG all his working life apart from a lighthouse stint.

On 16 October 1931 he was appointed temporary lightkeeper on Neptune Island — meant to be short term, but he stayed about 12 months due to a staff shortage, leaving in August 1932.

He married Flora Cameron ("Cam") at Murray Bridge in April 1936. They could not have children of their own and adopted a son, Ian.
