World War 1 dominates the decade, especially for Norman MacLeod.

Events

  • 18 May 1912 — Marjorie and Daisy Whillas, twins (Dick's sisters), born in Woodville. 30 May 1912 — Daisy dies. Marjorie died ~2.5 years later of diphtheria.
  • 22 Oct 1912 — 22 Stanley St, Woodville purchased by C.J. Whillas (Dick's father). See Adelaide / Woodville.
  • 28 Jun 1914 — World War 1 commences.
  • 1 Oct 1914 — Norman McLeod enlists in the 16th Battalion AIF at Morphettville, SA (service number 1305).
  • 2 May 1915 — Norman shot in the chest, Gallipoli.
  • 2 Jun 1915 — Norman transferred to H.S. Della and repatriated to Manchester Hospital, UK.
  • 1 Jul 1915 — Frances Louisa (Fran) Whillas, Dick's sister, born, Woodville (birth certificate held).
  • 3 Mar 1916 — Norman rejoins the 48th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir, Cairo.
  • 3 Jun 1916 — Norman arrives in France en route to the Western Front.
  • 6 Aug 1916 — Norman suffers shell-shock at Pozières; 10 Aug embarked for Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, via Boulogne and H.S. Cambria.
  • 28 Aug 1916 — Norman marries Catherine Gunn in Glasgow (marriage certificate held). See marriage event.
  • 11 Feb 1917 — Norman rejoins the 48th Battalion in France.
  • 11 Apr 1917 — Norman wounded in the right leg and left in the trenches during the Australian retreat at Bullecourt. Captured by the Germans; declared MIA; becomes a POW.
  • 17 Dec 1918 — Norman repatriated to the UK, admitted to Lewisham Military Hospital with influenza (Spanish Flu?).
  • 11 Nov 1918 — World War 1 ends.
  • 26 Mar 1919 — Norman working on telephony for Campbell and Isherwood, Glasgow.
  • 20 Sep 1919 — Norman discharged from the AIF in London after requesting to be demobbed in the UK.

Notes & uncertainties

  • The 48th Battalion was formed from sections of the 16th plus new recruits after the retreat from Gallipoli.
  • Norman's UK address was given as 10 Grove St, St George's Cross, Glasgow — also given as his father's address in his AIF enlistment documents. See Norman MacLeod's WW1 service.
