Robert started school in Glenelg in February 1949. Much of the documented family research — including the Australian Archives lighthouse log extracts (faxed to him 19 Mar 1997) — is associated with Robert's genealogical database.

His sister [Teena](/people/christine-frances-whillas-b1947) recalled a childhood incident in which “Robert chucked me on the old grey mare and slapped it on the rump.” The horse ran off and became stuck at a road grate; see [Teena's interview](/documents/interview-teena-mclean-2026).
