# Invergordon, Victoria

A locality near Numurkah in northern Victoria, where the Whillas family ran the Post Office through the 1960s.

## Connection to the family

- The family moved here c. late 1959/early 1960 from [Sth Purrumbete](/places/south-purrumbete-victoria), seeking a drier, warmer climate, and ran the **Invergordon Post Office**.
- [Teena Whillas](/people/christine-frances-whillas-b1947) recalled her mother teaching her telephone and counter work here; the interview describes the family post office as also serving as a newsagency. See [Teena's interview](/documents/interview-teena-mclean-2026).
- [Greg Stephen Whillas](/people/greg-stephen-whillas-b1960), the youngest child, was born at nearby Numurkah on 1 Nov 1960.
- After the [Hopetoun truck accident](/events/hopetoun-truck-accident-1970) in 1970 and [Dick's](/people/richard-charles-whillas-b1920) resulting bankruptcy, the Post Office was sold and the family moved to [East Fremantle](/places/east-fremantle-western-australia).

> The home-page photograph, *Invergordon Family Lounge* (newspaper, 1963), dates from this period.
