Events

  • Sep 1864 — Frances "Fannie" Johnston (b. 14 Aug 1849, Belleek, Ireland), together with her sister Minnie, left the UK for Adelaide. Exact date unknown. She was later employed by the John Martin department store as head milliner and dressmaker.
  • Sep 1868 — John Foggo Whillas (b. Edinburgh, 21 May 1846) left London for Adelaide on the sailing vessel St Vincent. His original diary of the voyage survives — see John Foggo Whillas voyage diary.
  • 1 Dec 1868 — John Foggo Whillas arrives at Port Adelaide.
  • Oct 1869 — Charles Bailie Whillas (b. 19 Mar 1848), brother of John, left Edinburgh for Adelaide. He worked as a teacher in the SA Department of Education, becoming an Inspector of Schools in 1899, and retired 31 Dec 1908.
